If there’s a term that captures to the nth degree the music of DJ, composer and master-producer Tapio ‘Orkidea’ Hakanen, it’s ‘retrofuturism’. Passing from simple terminology to his own personal genre playground, its past-meets-the-future melange is the driving ethic behind every piece of music he makes.
It sees him inhabit a remarkable & singular position in electronic music. Remaining anchored to its underground, he nonetheless enjoys the type of esteem typically reserved for the biggest trance stars of stage & studio. Notable by their cache of rarity, ‘Harmonia’ is just the fourth in Orkidea’s album line, throughout his near-¼ century of electronic music creation.
Following previous long-players (‘Taika’ - 2003, ‘Metaverse’ - 2008 and ’20’ in 2011), the album continues to track the inspirations of a man who has himself gone on to influence numerous subsequent production generations.
Through collaboration, sonic reference, cover version and smartly subtle nuance, he intensely channels it all into ‘Harmonia’. Included are the Beatport #1 charting ‘Purity’, (per DJ Mag) the “trance-progressively pumping” ‘Revolution Industrielle’ and the “coolly modulating analogue synths” (MIXMAG) of ‘Slowmotion III’. It features collaborative works with Solarstone, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Activa, Lowland & others, and ‘Harmonia’ fully comprises 14 new Orkidea recordings.

Salt Tank are one of the most inflential acts in trance’s long history, with a discography stretching back to the early 90’s with tracks like Eugina & Clone, the former having received countless remix treatments over the years and being a one of a handful of blueprint sfor the balearic trance genre. Therefore, Phoenix’s title could not be more apt. This collection of remixes spans several areas of the Pure Trance sound. First though, of course, to the Voices From The Fire Mix - previously unreleased (but recorded in 2008 and specially remastered for this release) which embodies the beauty of the Salt Tank sound – gently mesmeric layers of synths, light percussion and an incessant bassline take the listener on a beautiful trip through eyes-closed midnight trance music. Of course - the production has a winsome, retro feel to it, but that’s the plan. Also included from the original sessions is the vocal version. And now for the remixes... Allende’s Remix - freshly stripped back and polished in its EA3 Reconstruction from Solarstone’s Electronic Architecture 3 - presses the deeper prog-trance knobs and is arguably Anssi Hotti’s finest remix moment to date. Cranking up the octane is Sheffield’s Adam Ellis, who extracts the bare essentials from Phoenix and injects them with some peak time #138 adreneline. Darker and harder still is Tasso’s #140 remix, wild but controlled melodic acidic mayhem. Welcome back Salt Tank, we missed you.

*** NEWs SUBCULTURE Records ***
Adelphos - John O'Callaghan
John O'Callaghan returns to the darker side of his productions with the indescribable Adelphos. Adelphos is another reminder of why John O'Callaghan remains one of dance music’s most respected and multi-talented producers, no one else makes records like this. Techno drums with a progressive melancholic melody, at trance tempo. Edgy, futuristic and aimed straight for the dance-floor jugular -Adelphos is quintessential John O'Callaghan.
Degenerate Sean Tyas makes a long overdue visit to John O’Callaghan’s Subculture label - bringing with him a precise and clinical tech monster with overtones of psy and techno fused perfectly with a killer riff and über cool German electro vocal loop. This is the dark overlord of a record that you find yourself yearning for at 4.30am when the drinkers have gone home and the real party begins. In this new wave of Sean Tyas monster productions, where under his Degenerate moniker he takes things harder, tighter with more melancholic melodies - “Da Doo Da Dah” stands out as a powerful force to be reckoned with.
It is prime time material of collosal proportions and a fitting new chapter to the Subculture story.
You won’t find a more capable pair of studio hands for the vocals of Irish singers than John O’Callaghan’s.
The last few years alone have seen the Gaelic tones of Kathryn Gallagher, Erica Curran, Karen Kelly and (perhaps most famously on Big Skies) Audrey Gallagher translate into a string of high-yield club anthems.
With his first single of 2015, that arc extends a step further, as he welcomes another Irish songstress to the Subculture fold. Between Deirdre McLaughlin’s vocal immersion and John’s own (much-celebrated) brand of galvanised production, Stay With Me’s ready to deliver equal measures of emotion and elevation!
With instrumentals like One Special Particle, The Saw and Caves, John’s studio output tore up club floor tiles just as hard as ever in 2014. Stay With Me though sees him re-enter the vocal trance realm.
No stranger to that world herself, Deirdre McLaughlin’s previously brought vocal enrichment to tracks by Orla Feeney, Full Tilt and others. Chapter, verse (and chorus), her seraphim song injects John’s latest with a new level of lyrical & vocal poignancy. Set again his moving chord & pad driven melodies, and latterly the synth-surge of the break, Stay With Me achieves peak-time attitude… and altitude!
Bryn Liedl’s new track ‘Statues’ screams ‘we’re ready for the summer’ with its uplifting sound and Bethany Marie’s cheerful vocals. Bryan Kearney premiered his remix on A State of Trance 700 Buenos Aires and wow, did he let go of all the brakes on this one, taking it from a relaxing beach party right into a 3AM clubbing ambiance. It’s Bryan Kearney at his finest on GO On Air!
Preceded by two massive samplers so far, here is the third instalment, containing another set of exclusive, full-length records from volume 3 of the incredible Future Sound of Egypt compilation. This time around, Arctic Moon blows us away with 'Astoria', Bjorn Akesson is featured with fan-favorite 'Shadows' and Will Rees completes the trio with his massive tune 'Persistence'. Together, they will dominate your playlists for time to come!
Featured on Future Sound Of Egypt Vol. 3 and also being the first single of the compilation... FSOE's very own Standerwick teamed up with the sublime vocalist Jennifer Rene for a new record that is destined to achieve great things. The pumping bassline, the beautiful vocals and the emotional atmosphere are a delight to all that dare to experience this pristine gem. This tune is for 'All Of Us'!
If the first sampler didn't fully win you over, this next one should do the trick. 'Sampler 2' also follows the release of the third instalment of the Future Sound of Egypt compilation and contains another set of three exclusive, full-length tunes, ready to give you all you ever wanted. Amine Maxwell & Mhammed El Alami get the fire started with 'If I Stay', and Costa's 'Lost In The Wind' adds the fuel needed to make sure the inferno will keep thriving for a long, long time. To top it all off, there's an outstanding track by Eloquentia called 'Nowhere To Run', completing this sublime second part of the FSOE vol. 3 Samplers.

*** Molecule Recordings ***
Release #4 from Chicago’s Nick Stoynoff on Molecule is an addictive helping of Tech House. The Original Mix is constructed around an incessant Italo bassline, analogue sequences, acidic burbling and some nifty edits, and the similar-yet-different EA3 Reconstruction is the full-length Solarstone-tweaked version lifted directly from his recent ‘Electronic Architecture 3’ compilation. Konektiv’s ambiguously-titled remix is a master-class in what can be achieved by morphing and manipulating filters while keeping the source material to a minimum – a more expressive and immersive example of deep Tech House you’d struggle to lay your hands on. Finally, the ‘Slow’ version is exactly that – at a sedentary 100BPM ‘You’re OK’ is re-envisaged with one eye on the lounge bars & a toe simultaneously dipped in the pool.
Peace Of Mind - Above & Beyond ft. Zoë Johnston - THE REMIXES - _________________________________________
The newest single to be taken from their latest artist album 'We Are All We Need,' which went top 15 in the UK charts, and hit the top 5 of the US iTunes album chart, "Peace Of Mind" (feat. Zoë Johnston) is another reminder of their ability to soar above the status quo and reach beyond obvious trends. Responsible for some of Anjunabeats biggest vocal numbers over recent years, Hungarian duo Myon & Shane 54 return to their label with their sun soaked summer of love mix. Painting a mellow and dreamy soundscape, Anjunadeep's enigmatic Croquet Club channels a stripped down Massive Attack for his quirky electronic take, while Italian pairing Thomas Schwartz and Fausto Fanizza bring their trademark bassline house for a housier alternative. Completing the package is a dark and ethereal remake from Abstrkkt.
Talented Helsinki producer Yotto aka Otto Yliperttula is the latest signing to the Anjunadeep roster, debuting with a heavy-hitting two tracker “Memento / Azzurro”.
First heard in James Grant’s Anjunadeep Edition 50 mix “Memento” is a huge dancefloor weapon, echoing the bass-driven sounds of Jonas Rathsman and Dusky. Rolling low-end stabs surge through murky, atmospheric melodies leading to an epic breakdown.
“Azzurro” is another bass heavy roller, built around a growling groove that gives way to a nostalgic piano line and soaring pads, rising to a dramatic crescendo before dropping back into darkness.
Super8 & Tab's haunting vocal anthem "Patience" (feat. Julie Thompson) ses 4 dramatic re-imaginings from Estiva, Tom Fall, Thomas Mengel and the Finnish duo themselves.
It has been quite a year for Slovakian Nifra. Along with her original Athena and remix of Markus Schulz's Erase You, her Coldharbour legacy is about to be cemented further; aided by a collaboration with newcomer Artisan, entitled Rampage.
A fixture in Markus Schulz's Global DJ Broadcast World Tours in Bucharest, Kiev and San Francisco, Rampage has been a highlight for many this year so far. Powerful and melodic, the track shines in the stadium setting, and will light up a busy summer festival season.
Well done to Nifra and welcome to Artisan, you have made quite an impact with Rampage.
Despite his wealth of production, New York native M.I.K.E. Push continues to capture the imagination with his blissful melodies. Following Guardians of the Deep, he is back on Coldharbour with another packed three track release.
Leading track Starcraft is blissful in vibe, and its timing is effective with summer on the horizon. Pushed Away is an energetic and devilish little number, varying in speed and hooking in an audience. And Visions Become Reality is a beautiful trancer in Mike's typical signature.
All three tracks will occupy the playlists of many this season, all delivered in the quality one expects from M.I.K.E. Push.
This Aly & Fila remix of Bobina’s ‘Invisible Touch’ has been featured on his #Uplifting album and is now up for a separate release. Expect big beats, a beautiful break and spectacular melodies.

(THE REMIXES) ______________________________________
Beatport Release Date: 1st June 2015
Release Date (all stores): 8th June 2015
Following two industry-acclaimed releases on Always Alive, UK producer Breame presents his newest tune 'You Are The Sun' featuring Fiona Reid on vocals.
Harking back to Trance classics that were just as fit for casual listening as for energetic club nights, 'You Are The Sun' lays down a pounding bass-heavy rhythm with subtle strings and oscillating synthesizers, while Fiona Reid's intoxicating lyrics retain the tune's sentimental value.
Temple One enhances the track's power on his remix, adding a tasteful punch to the drums and synthesizer elements to reach another level of intensity.
A more progressive spin on the record comes from Kris Maydak's distinguished version, which adds additional bounce, in order to transform the record into an airier and more uplifting experience.
Blood Groove & Kikis remix showcases their engineering prowess, enhancing the track with an additional shot of energy, by sharpening the bass and synthesizer elements to make the groove pop even more.
